PORTAL OPTIONS EP NOW AVAILABLE

The fantastic new Portal Options EP I blogged about here earlier is now available.

It is available to order now from the Make Mine Music MySpace page HERE and website HERE.

The four-track EP features vocal contributions from Glen Johnson of Piano Magic/Future Conditional, Angele David-Guillou of Klima/Piano Magic, Ben Holton of Epic45/My Autumn Empire, and Lorraine Lelis, ex-Mahogany. All of the tracks were co-written with the collaborators. Glen Johnson also provides a "Future Conditional" remix of the title track.

The CD is priced at £5.00 including postage to anywhere in the world. It will also be available in shops from 30th March.

Here's what Norman's Records have said about it.

"It would appear that Portal have now returned from a brief hiatus to present us with 'Options'. This seems to be a concerted effort to evolve beyond previous efforts and sees Portal collaborate with Piano Magic's Glen Johnson, Epic 45's Ben Holton and Lorraine Lelis of Mahogany. The result is pure New Order, a surprisingly commercial move but it works beautifully, invoking those classic electro 12" dance mixes that would rock the Hacienda to the break of dawn throughout the late 80s. Each of the vocal contributions really helps enhance Scott Sinfield's subtle electronic synth-pokery and takes Portal's recording output to new heights both in terms of personal musical development and commercial appeal. The Glen Johnson remix is also pretty sweet. Definitely worth look." (Norman Records, 20.03.09)

Stunning new Portal EP

Simply had to blog about this one. Portal is releasing a new EP 'Options' in March on Make Mine Music. I've been lucky enough to hear some of the tracks and they're blinding. Scott has kindly upped to Soundcloud an alternative mix of one of the tracks recorded with Ben Holton from Epic45 for everyone to hear. It's frankly superb. The track is entitled You're Building Over My Childhood and it's a lush slab of guitar pop with a tendency to stay in your brain long after hearing.

The new Portal EP "Options" will be released in March 2009 on Make Mine Music (MMM048). The 20-minute CD features four new tracks:

1. Options (with vocals by Glen Johnson, courtesy of Future Conditional)
2. You're Building Over My Childhood (with vocals and additional guitars by Ben Holton, courtesy of Epic45 & My Autumn Empire)
3. Slow Burner (with vocals by Lorraine Lelis, who has previously sung with Mahogany and Auburn Lull)
4. Options (Future Conditional remix) (with vocals by Glen Johnson and Angèle David-Guillou, courtesy of Klima)

Schengen on the remix tip

Distant Noise have just released the remix album as part of their first series of CDs. The artists on the album are all those involved with the label's first series of releases that began at the start of the year. We were asked to remix Yellow 6's 'Kulturhuset' track.

This album along with a few remaining copies of the album we did earlier in the year for the label are available here

An album from Jellya

Just before my trip to Spain I started compiling the tracks for my debut Jelly Antler album. It was an interesting and revealing process on the back of the Schengen album, my mind is definitely ready for track listing decisions and some heavy editing and hours to be spent on mastering (no monitors again, and I don't think I can borrow this time).
11 tracks have made it through to the shortlist and they'll probably all stay which is gratifying at this stage. I've no title in mind at all at present, but I'm sure one will come up over a bottle of wine or three with E. The last two albums came that way.

Schengen Ce Gil Album reviews

We've received some cracking reviews for the new album. Here are the reviews from the mighty Norman Records and Small Fish.

Norman Records said...
Now on that limited Distant Noise CD label comes a new CD from Schengen, 'Ce Gil '. 10 tracks of atmospheric variable electronics from the former krautrocker. 'Fendered' is playful electro taking in snippets of Thieves Like Us era New Order with light techno touches. 'Duc' is aquatic, motorik electro. Some parts glide & glow with positive radiance. Really earthy & pretty, fluid textures, skittering beats, hypnotic Orbital-esque piano loops, digital bursts of fuzz....the list goes on. This is a quality release, an eclectic collection of moods from a quiet old master! Limited to 100 numbered copies so be quick!
This is pretty damn cool!"

Distant Noise have released some super CDs in the last couple of months and the Bristol duo of Schengen deliver the third in the series. This album pretty much defies categorization in many ways and I think that's why it's so good. Having said that it does mostly feature electronic music in many different shapes and forms. Thus, you get melodic, classic sounding electronica with sweet chords and homely tones. But, you also get some fairly hefty sounding old-school techno tracks with a minimal leaning and some very robust beats. In my opinion, that's actually when they're at their best as they really let loose some rocking moments. All in all in it's a brilliantly varied and extremely tidy set of tracks. Bravo.

new schengen CD 'the Beijing of our career' is released

schengen release their new, and debut album this week and it's a great feeling to have done so. It can be purchased at makeminemusic (see links opposite). The alternative press release appears below because it's too amusing not to be published. Thanks Scott.

Schengen are Bontempi fetishists Ian and Nick. Both have paid their dues within the music industry, Ian being a founder member of Kajagoogoo and Nick half of Eurovision hopefuls Bardo. They met by chance through their day jobs, as dancers on the Brother Beyond tour, where they discovered a mutual love of Einsturzende Neubauten and crisps. "The Beijing of our Career" is Schengen's first full-length release. "We would have recorded a full-length album before," Nick explains, "but we never had enough coins for the meter and kept running out of power". Recorded by candlelight, the album follows on from EPs on Roisin International and some French label. The new album moves into new territory for the band and recalls both the dark, swirling majesty of Bros' sophomore album and the emotional intensity of "Martika's Kitchen". Imagine the hair of Howard Jones on the body of Aled Jones and you'd be nowhere near.

"The Beijing of our Career" will be promoted with a campaign of abstinence. Nick will be appearing in a series of pubs across the Bristol area, whilst Ian will be finishing his new collection of short stories entitled "I Know I'm Here Somewhere".
